Medical database texts that require a high level of accuracy are translated into several languages, and the final quality is always verified by a professional in the field who is a native speaker of the target language.
Abomics produces digital tools for doctors that are intended to make pharmacogenetic information part of clinical decision-making. The most important product is an individual report based on a genetic test result that supports the selection of a suitable medication and dosage for each patient.
Strict regulation of medical devices and responsibilities related to patient safety means that the instructions in the database must be accurate, even when they are used in language areas that extend beyond Finnish and English.
“The legislation is very stringent, and it also sets high requirements for the translation service provider. Lingsoft was selected as a partner because they are able to respond to both language technology and substance expertise,” says Mikko Inkinen, Director of Software Development at Abomics.
SME check provides clinical assurance
Lingsoft translates Abomics materials into German, Swedish, Estonian, French and Dutch – and more languages are on the way. The actual translation work is done by an experienced language service professional, but that is not enough. Every translation is checked by an expert in the field, which means a nurse, pharmacist or other medical professional who is a native speaker of the target language. The SME check (SME = subject matter expert) ensures that every translation is accurate, both linguistically and medically.
“This SME check is a critical part of quality assurance for us. It provides cultural and clinical understanding that cannot be found in dictionaries. We focus on minimising risks and complying with regulations,” emphasises Inkinen.
Quick translations support internationalisation
For Abomics, cooperation with Lingsoft has been an important factor in terms of growth. Nearly continuous updating of information requires smooth communications and the capacity for quick delivery, especially with regard to new customer relationships.
“If I have a new customer from Italy, I can immediately promise that we will be able to complete the translations quickly and with high quality. In our business, this verified translation is a basic requirement,” says Inkinen.

“We have a designated contact person and an electronic portal at our disposal. If a customer requests corrections, Lingsoft responds quickly – usually within a few days.”
