European defence and the possibilities of language technology
The NEMO project aims to utilise HLTs in various defence applications for all official languages in the European Union. These technologies will be tailored to match the specific needs of different defence functions, including intelligence, command and control, logistics, communication, and training.
The goal is to enable practical, multilingual communication between armed forces, defence institutions, and relevant industry partners across Europe in complex and dynamic environments. The five-year project kicked off in December 2024.
Project objective
The tools developed in NEMO — including Lingsoft’s modules — are designed to assist in real-world defence scenarios, from field communication to rapid information retrieval. NEMO’s primary goal is to produce a demonstrator combining multiple HLT capabilities into a unified, adaptable platform. The demonstrator will be used to examine the possibilities of applying those technologies in defence-related organisations, including both industrial and institutional end users.
These technologies include machine translation, speech recognition, semantic analysis and summarisation. These technologies represent Lingsoft’s core expertise, now further advanced through developments in generative AI. The demonstrator will be trained with specific defence-related material to ensure accurate terminology.
NEMO consists of four different language technology modules: speech recognition, recognition of handwritten and printed documents, translation, and information extraction and retrieval. Lingsoft will be participating in the development of speech recognition and translation solutions, and this work is well underway.
Project organisation
The NEMO consortium consists of 14 participants from 8 different EU Member States and Norway. Participants vary from research institutions to military academies and technology companies. The project coordinator is SINTEF from Norway.
