Lingsoft is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2026.

Language technology pioneers Fred Karlsson and Kimmo Koskenniemi founded Lingsoft in 1986. This newspaper clipping makes it clear that discussions about AI were nothing new – even at that time.

Lingsoft’s roots in the academic world continue to guide the company’s activities through its core values, for example, in the form of diverse project activities and a passion for innovation. The four-decade journey to becoming Finland’s largest provider of language intelligence services has been long and very interesting. During the anniversary year, we will be highlighting some of Lingsoft’s milestones in addition to taking a look into the future of language intelligence.

This Ilta-Sanomat newspaper article in the photo describes the development of artificial intelligence, including the process of adding professional expertise to artificial intelligence (called an expert program in the article), which can then provide advice in problem situations. The starting point sounds familiar in our current era of generative AI.

The article also interviews researcher Kimmo Koskenniemi about his work on developing a word analyser, in other words, a two-level morphology model. The two-level model is one of the basic technologies that became the cornerstones of Lingsoft’s activities. Its revolutionary impact on language intelligence technologies is still visible in today’s world.
