Lingsoft has been using AI in its business for 40 years. Lingsoft talks AI is a series of articles in which our own experts give their views on AI and its use and potential in the language sector.

Harnessing the power of AI in language technologies

Michael Stormbom, Lingsoft’s Chief Technology Officer, has been at the forefront of integrating artificial intelligence into language production processes, steering the company’s strategy towards Lingsoft’s “human in the loop” approach.

Michael has an extensive background in information technology and a career spanning over 18 years at Lingsoft. His insights reveal a nuanced understanding of how Lingsoft utilises AI to enhance its customers’ business operations.

A balanced approach to AI

AI is not just a buzzword at Lingsoft; it’s a crucial service delivery component among others. According to Michael Stormbom, this approach is evident in how Lingsoft uses AI to automate rote and repetitive tasks, allowing their language experts to focus on areas that require human judgement and expertise.

“The mainstream breakthrough of AI reaffirms Lingsoft’s “human in the loop” approach as the correct one,” says Michael. “We’re not just following trends – we’re focusing on the concrete benefits AI brings to our workflow and customers’ processes.”

Michael emphasises AI’s dual role in enhancing efficiency and maintaining high quality in language services. This balance is crucial in maintaining the integrity and quality of the services provided.

“While automation handles the predictable, our experts oversee the critical aspects. There still are customer requirements and needs where full automation without a human in the loop wouldn’t be sufficient. That’s why we won’t operate without human oversight,” he says.

The human element beyond automation

The “human in the loop” philosophy is fundamental to Lingsoft’s operations. According to Michael, automation is essential, but it’s the human touch that differentiates Lingsoft’s services. The aim is for technology to enhance human capabilities, not replace them.

“Our experts ensure that AI applications meet our high standards of quality and relevance. This approach enhances efficiency and also ensures that the nuances of language and communication are appropriately managed,” says Michael.

Lingsoft is committed to developing AI applications that are not only technologically advanced but also profoundly aligned with client needs, emphasising practical and beneficial solutions in real-world applications. Looking ahead, Michael Stormbom sees a significant role for AI in driving further innovations in language technology.

“The future is about leveraging AI to free up our experts to think more creatively and address more complex challenges,” he says.

Customer benefit remains king

Despite the potential, Michael Stormbom remains cautiously optimistic about the future of AI in language services. Lingsoft’s strategic integration of AI with a strong emphasis on human expertise ensures that its language services are advanced but also reliable and client-focused.

The goal is not to use AI just for the sake of innovation but to enhance the services provided to clients, ensuring that technology serves a purpose and delivers real value.

“We’re still navigating through the hype, but the focus should always be on how AI can deliver tangible benefits to our clients. The main thing is that AI serves the customer’s process and business goals, not vice versa,” he concludes.
